Description:

As a design engineer my position requires me to draft electrical room CAD models and convey their build requirements to our shop via 2D drawings for accurate construction.

MC Dean is focused on the design and integration of electrical systems in new and renovated commercial constructions. The Modular Design Integration group with-in MC Dean focuses on the design and shipping of modular electrical assemblies mainly in the form of modular electrical rooms. These rooms are self contained assemblies including walls, electrical equipment, conduit, and lighting. Designed in Tysons, manufactured in Caroline County, and shipped across the country, MDI electrical rooms have been built as large as 17' wide and 70' long.

The design of these rooms requires the engineer to review spec documents provided by architects and other project teams. The specs are used to design a building model in Revit which includes all walls and their UL listings, electrical layout, plumbing, lighting, fire alarm, etc. The MDI Engineer uses these tools to design a fully transportable room in SolidWorks. The engineer must consider the layout of all components, how they integrate with other systems in the building, adding structural support for shipping, ensuring additional support is physically able to be assembled and disassembled once on site, ensuring all specs and fire ratings are followed, how the room will be physically transported to its final location on site, and designing in such a manner as to be manufacturing friendly for the shop.

Once design is complete, the model is converted into 2D drawings outlining the construction of the module. All information must be conveyed including, material, material sizes, painting and powder coating details, welding instructions, assembly order, hardware, torque specs, and UL instructions. Many room models include over 1,000 components and drawing packets often exceed 100 pages per room module.
